Teen dreams (2014)

ART EXHIBITION / THE INVISIBLE LINE GALLERY, LONDON, U.K

Curated by KONSTANTINOS MENELAOU

Commissioned by FRINGE FILM AND ARTS FEST

Artists: STUART SANDFORD

Stuart Sandford's whose work revolves around exploring ideas of sexuality, masculinity, and identity stemming from adolescence. Invoking keen directorial and editorial skill, his work calls to mind the tenderness and innocence of Hollywood teen heartthrobs of the 1980s, while re-appropriating and re-contextualizing these familiar icons (including Chad Allen, Corey Haim, and a young, fresh-faced Matthew Broderick) with a provocative, sexy, neo-punk aesthetic. His process challenges the notions of authorship and image-maker (Sandford draws inspiration from eighties teen fan-mags and accepts photographic contributions from others for his own projects). This exhibition presents a selection of new and recent photographic, sculptural, and moving image works, many being seen for the first time in London.

Stuart Sandford received his BA Fine Art, with Honours, in 2006. He has exhibited his photographic, video and installation work in New York, London, Berlin, Basel, Rotterdam, Rome, Madrid, and Vienna, amongst others. In 2010 he curated the group show HUNG and co-curated Boy BANG Boy, both of which took place in London. His work has been featured in magazines internationally, including BUTT, GT, Maenner, Kaiserin, attitude and Objektiv, the Norwegian journal of contemporary photography. Based in London but currently artist-in-residence at Tom of Finland Foundation in Echo Park, LA, Stuart is also a published and produced writer and screenwriter currently working on his first feature film.
